How to Start and End a Break

Use Take Break while you are clocked in to keep break time separate from worked time. The exact steps depend on the Break Mode configured by an Owner or Admin.

Step 1: Tap Take Break

From the active shift screen, tap Take Break.

In Flexible mode, the break starts immediately. Its paid or unpaid treatment comes from the account’s Flexible break setting.

In Predefined mode, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Choose a break type

Select the correct break type, review whether it is Paid or Unpaid and any time limit, then tap Start Break.

Time Clock

Break Types

Lunch · Unpaid, 30 minutes
Rest · Paid, 15 minutes

Choose carefully. Paid break time remains in paid hours; unpaid break time is excluded from paid hours. A Manager can correct the break later if you select the wrong type.

Step 3: Monitor the break timer

The time clock changes to ON BREAK and shows the break timer. A limited break counts down to its configured limit; an unlimited break counts elapsed time.

On Break

Lunch · Unpaid · 30 minutes
Timeline
Clocked in 8:02 AM
Started Lunch break 12:00 PM

If the break type has Auto End enabled, ShiftFlow ends it at the configured time limit. Return to the Clock tab and confirm the screen shows Working before resuming work.

If Auto End is off and the limited break passes its limit, the timer changes to BREAK OVERRUN. End the break as soon as you return.

Step 4: Tap End Break

When you return to work, tap End Break. The main shift continues; ending a break does not clock you out.

Time Clock
On Break

Lunch · Unpaid · 30 minutes
Timeline

Check that the timer says Working and that the timeline contains the break start and end.

Why Take Break may be missing

  • Auto Deduct mode: ShiftFlow applies configured deductions after clock-out, so team members do not start or end breaks during the shift.
  • No predefined break types: In Predefined mode, ask a Manager to create a break type before you try again.
  • Kiosk only: If your account requires kiosk actions, start and end the break from the shared kiosk.
  • Already on break: The action changes from Take Break to End Break.

Notes for Managers

  • Configure break modes, paid or unpaid types, time limits, Auto End, and Overrun Correction under More → Account Settings → Break Settings. See How to Set Account Break Policy.
  • Overrun Correction can convert time beyond a paid break limit to unpaid time. Confirm the account’s policy before relying on it.
  • If a team member forgot to end a break or selected the wrong type, edit the recorded shift and confirm paid hours after the change.
