What a nurse-to-patient ratio is
A nurse-to-patient ratio is the number of patients assigned to one nurse at a point in time. Divide the patients on a unit by the nurses caring for them: 24 patients and 4 nurses is a 1:6 ratio — each nurse covers six patients. Why staffing ratios matter
Staffing isn't only a budgeting question. Large studies have linked each extra patient per nurse to measurably worse outcomes — more falls, infections, failure-to-rescue events, and higher 30-day mortality. That research is part of why California wrote ratios into law in the first place.

How do I calculate a nurse-to-patient ratio?

What is a safe nurse-to-patient ratio?

Which states have mandated nurse-to-patient ratios?

Does California really enforce ratios at all times?

Should I staff to the census or the bed count?

How does patient acuity change the ratio?
