What should a contractor say when asking for referrals?

Use seven contractor referral request text templates for SMS, email, and in-person asks that sound natural, stay low pressure, and share one contact route.

A field Worker slides one job-tagged business contact baton through an open pass-along ring, with no return channel for another person's details.

Hi [customer name], this is [name] from [business]. Thanks again for trusting us with [completed job]. If you know someone who needs help with [specific service or problem], would you pass along our number: [business phone number]? If nobody comes to mind, no problem.

That is enough. The customer knows who is asking, why you thought of them, what kind of work to mention, and how another person can contact you. They are free to pass the number along or leave it there.

These referral request text templates assume the job is complete, no issue remains open, and the customer has clearly expressed satisfaction. Deciding which customers are eligible and when to ask is a separate job. A positive public review is not a requirement, and a review request should not be attached to this one.

How to write a contractor referral request

A job-specific reference. Name the work you completed together. “Thanks for trusting us with the panel replacement” sounds like a real customer conversation. “Thanks for your business” could have been sent to anyone.

A recognizable service fit. Tell the customer which problem or service to keep in mind. They should not have to describe everything the business does.

One light request. Ask them to pass along your information if the right person comes to mind. Do not make them responsible for finding you work.

One shareable contact route. Use the phone number, website, or contact card that the business actually monitors. Do not load the message with all three.

Let the customer make the introduction. Asking them to share your information is easier on the relationship than asking for a friend’s name or private phone number. The other person can then decide whether to contact you.

Replace only the fields that apply. Each version uses one monitored contact route; do not add a review request, promotion, second favor, or request for somebody else’s details.

If a customer does not reply to the request, leave it alone. This article is not a reminder sequence, and silence is not an invitation to keep asking.

How to personalize a referral request

Before sending, check five fields:

  • Customer: Use the name they know you by.
  • Completed job: Name the actual work, not a broad trade category.
  • Useful outcome: Use this only when the customer mentioned it or the result is recorded clearly.
  • Service fit: Describe the kind of person or problem you can genuinely help.
  • Contact route: Give one number, website, or card that reaches the business.

Read the message aloud once. If it sounds like an advertisement rather than something you would say at the job, remove extra adjectives and explanation. The request should still make sense without a discount, reward, or referral-program link.

Keep one-ask discipline. Do not add a review, testimonial, social follow, repeat booking, or payment reminder to the same message. Each one asks the customer to do something different; combining them makes a sincere referral request feel like a checklist.

The strongest wording does not pressure the customer or promise a benefit. It recalls the work, names the right service fit, and gives them one simple thing to pass along.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same referral request template for different trades?

Yes. Keep the four-part structure, then replace the completed job, service fit, and contact route with details that match the actual business. A specific plumbing, cleaning, or roofing job sounds natural; a generic trade label does not.

Should I ask for a referral’s phone number?

No. Ask the customer to pass along the business’s phone number, website, or contact card instead. The other person can then choose whether to get in touch, and the customer does not have to share someone else’s details.
