Best Google Business Profile Categories for Electricians
Choose the best Google Business Profile category for an electrician, compare installation, EV charging, lighting, and generator options, and avoid stuffing.
For a general electrical business, use Electrician as the primary starting point. Public US category candidates for narrower operations include Electrical installation service, Electric vehicle charging station contractor, and Lighting contractor. Electric generator shop is a retail identity, not a shortcut for an electrician who installs generators.
Do not add another category simply because one of those jobs is licensed, profitable, or featured on the website. An additional category needs to describe a real specialty operation, not one more thing an electrician can do.

How to choose a Google Business Profile category for an electrician
Pull the last 90 days of completed jobs and write down five facts:
- What customers call the business when they recommend it
- Which jobs customers can book directly
- Which team members are trained and assigned to each specialty
- Which tools, vehicles, licenses, and estimating processes support the work
- Whether the website and phone intake send customers into a distinct service line
The primary category should match the clearest overall answer. Additional categories require their own evidence.
| Primary starting point | Add only if the business really is this | Keep in Services |
|---|---|---|
Electrician for a general electrical operation | Electrical installation service, Electric vehicle charging station contractor, Lighting contractor, or another verified option that accurately describes the company | Troubleshooting, outlet and switch repair, panel upgrades, rewiring, lighting installation, charger installation, generator work, and other customer jobs |
The middle column contains candidates, not a checklist. ShiftFlow uses the evidence below as a conservative accuracy test; Google does not require every additional category to have a separate crew, webpage, or intake form. Confirm the exact label, then judge the combined facts.
When an electrician should add a specialty category
A specialty becomes more than a Service when customers experience it as a distinct part of the company.
Useful proof includes:
- A meaningful, sustained share of completed jobs
- Team members trained and regularly scheduled for that work
- Dedicated diagnostic, installation, testing, or commissioning equipment
- Required trade licenses, permits, or credentials where applicable
- A separate estimate, sales, or intake path
- A clear customer-facing offer that the company can deliver without bundling it into unrelated electrical work
A license shows that the company may be qualified to perform work under the applicable rules. It does not prove that the company operates as every business type the license might allow. Google category selection also does not replace state or local licensing requirements.
Installation and repair
Most electricians both install and repair electrical systems. A panel replacement is installation work; diagnosing a failed circuit is repair work. Those jobs can sit under Services while Electrician describes the business.
Electrical installation service becomes more credible when the company is built around planned projects, estimating, permitting, installation crews, and commissioning. The reviewed public list did not show a general electrical-repair category, so a repair-led business should not invent one; Electrician may remain the best label while repair jobs sit in Services.
If the same electricians do both through one dispatch and estimating process, selecting separate identities adds little accuracy.
Generators
Installing an occasional standby generator does not create a generator company.
The generator-specific label found in the reviewed public list was Electric generator shop, which describes a retail shop rather than an installation division. An electrician that installs and maintains generators but does not operate a shop should keep that work in Services unless the live account selector offers another accurate business type.
EV charging
EV-charger installation is often one job inside a residential or commercial electrical operation. A dedicated webpage is useful for customers, but the page alone is not evidence for an additional category.
Electric vehicle charging station contractor may fit a contractor built around charger projects. Repeated charger-only leads, team capability, commercial or fleet work where offered, equipment, and a direct estimate path are useful ShiftFlow judgment signals. Even with that evidence, confirm the exact label in the live account selector.
Lighting and automation
Installing fixtures, replacing drivers, adding controls, and troubleshooting lighting are ordinary electrical Services for many companies.
Consider Lighting contractor only when customers hire the company specifically for lighting projects and the team has the necessary capability. The reviewed public list did not show a generic building-automation contractor label, so do not invent one from a few smart-switch or fixture jobs.
Hypothetical Google Business Profile category example for an electrician
Brightline is fictional. Its percentages show how to review a mixed workload; they are not Google’s cutoffs for additional categories. The company has five licensed electricians and one dispatcher. Over the last 90 days, 61% of jobs were troubleshooting and repairs. Panel upgrades, rewiring, and planned installations accounted for 27%. EV-charger installations made up 9%, and lighting-control work made up 3%.
All five electricians rotate through service and installation work. Two have completed additional EV-equipment training, but charger calls use the same estimate form, vehicles, tools, and schedule as other residential jobs. Brightline has an EV-charger webpage, but it does not have a charger-only estimator, fleet offer, dedicated crew, or separate intake path.
Generator leads are referred to a partner. The company installs ordinary lighting controls but does not design or commission building-automation systems.
Brightline’s category decision is straightforward:
- Primary starting point:
Electrician, subject to confirmation in the current selector. It describes the company, team, dispatch, and full job mix. Electrical installation service: reject as an additional identity for now. Repair and installation are both material, but they are delivered by one general electrical operation.Electric vehicle charging station contractor: reject for now. Nine percent of jobs and a service page show a real Service, not yet an accurate description of Brightline’s business.Electric generator shop: reject because Brightline is not a generator retailer and refers generator work out.Lighting contractor: reject because ordinary controls work does not support that specialist identity.- Services: troubleshooting, outlet and switch repair, panel upgrades, rewiring, lighting installation, EV-charger installation, and every other current job the company can accurately deliver.
If Brightline later becomes a charger-led contractor with the customer demand and delivery capability to match, it can review Electric vehicle charging station contractor again. Wanting more charger leads is not the same change.
How to change an electrician’s Google Business Profile categories
Google notes that a category change can cause another verification request. Before editing:
- Record the existing primary and additional categories.
- Confirm each proposed label in the live US selector.
- Match every category to completed jobs, team capability, tools, licenses where applicable, estimates, and intake.
- Remove candidates supported only by one webpage, one job, or a desired lead.
- Make the justified category correction without stacking unrelated major edits.
- Be ready to complete reverification if Google asks.
Finish with five questions:
- Does the primary category describe what customers hire the whole company as?
- Has the exact label been confirmed in the current US selector?
- Does every additional category have a material, independently supported operation behind it?
- Are individual electrical jobs kept in Services?
- Do the licenses where applicable, team, tools, estimates, website, and customer experience tell the same story?
If an additional category needs the name of one job to sound accurate, it probably belongs in Services.
Once the categories are settled, an overlapping electrical job list can be cleaned up with the GBP service-list guide, which shows how to combine wording variants and retain only material work customers can hire the company to perform.
Google Business Profile category FAQs for electricians
Should an electrical company use Electrician or Electrical installation service?
Use Electrician for a general business that diagnoses, repairs, and installs electrical systems. Consider Electrical installation service when planned installation projects, rather than general electrical work, accurately define the operation.
Is Electric generator shop right for a generator installer?
Not when the company only installs generators. Electric generator shop describes a retail shop identity; generator installation and maintenance can remain in Services for an electrician that does not operate a shop.
When should an electrician add Electric vehicle charging station contractor?
Add it only when charger projects accurately describe a customer-facing part of the business, not simply because the company has completed several installations. Confirm the exact label in the live account selector.
