How Do I Write a Google Business Profile Description for a Home-Service Business?
Write a clear Google Business Profile description that explains the business, service area, main work, and concrete proof without keyword stuffing or sales copy.
Write four things: what the business is, who or where it serves, the main work it performs, and one or two facts that prove the fit.
Google currently allows up to 750 characters. That is a limit, not a target. A clear 350-character description is better than 750 characters of repeated services, cities, and sales language.
Google documentation checked: July 21, 2026 (United States).
Google Business Profile description template
| Part | Question to answer | Useful material |
|---|---|---|
| Business identity | What kind of business is this? | Residential plumber, commercial cleaner, HVAC contractor, landscaping company |
| Customer or service area | Who does it serve, and in what genuine operating area? | Homeowners in a named metro area, property managers, light-commercial customers |
| Material services | Which few services best explain the work? | The main service lines, not every task and wording variation |
| Specific proof | What current fact helps a customer judge the business? | Years operating, licensed status where applicable, equipment, specialization, focus |
Use this fill-in version:
[Business name] is a [business type] serving [customers or genuine service area]. We provide [two to four material service lines]. [Specific, current proof about experience, licensing where applicable, team capability, equipment, or operating focus].
A service-area business can name the area it serves without publishing a private home address. Use the city, metro, county, or other real coverage description customers recognize. Do not squeeze every suburb into the paragraph.
What Google allows in a business description
Google says the Business description can include what the business offers, what makes it different, how long it has operated, and other information useful to customers.
Keep these restrictions beside the draft:
- Do not exceed 750 characters.
- Do not include URLs or HTML.
- Do not focus the description on promotions, prices, or sales.
That means no coupon code, limited-time discount, “book today and save,” or price list. Put timely updates in the appropriate current-content field, not in the evergreen business summary.
The description is also a poor place for a phone number. The profile already has a phone field, and a number uses space that should explain the business.
What to include in the description
Trusted, best, leading, and number one sound strong until the customer asks what they mean. Replace them with a fact.
| Weak claim | Stronger, if true |
|---|---|
| Trusted local plumber | Serving residential customers since 2012 |
| Leading HVAC experts | Team services and installs residential heat pumps and central AC systems |
| Best commercial cleaner | Nightly office cleaning for buildings up to 50,000 square feet |
| Professional landscaper | Crew operates commercial mowing and compact excavation equipment |
Use licensed or insured only when it is accurate and current. Licensing rules differ by trade and state. Do not imply that one credential applies everywhere, and do not add a license claim the business cannot document.
Business description mistakes to avoid
BEST PLUMBER IN AUSTIN! We are the #1 affordable Austin plumber for plumbing Austin, drain cleaning Austin, emergency plumber Austin, water heaters Austin, and more. Call 512-555-0100 TODAY for 20% OFF! Visit https://example.com.
The problems are easy to mark:
BESTand#1are unsupported claims.- The same location is repeated as a search phrase.
- The services are a keyword list rather than a useful explanation.
- The phone number duplicates another profile field.
- The discount and sales call dominate the description.
- The URL is not allowed in the description.
- Nothing tells the customer what kind of plumbing operation this is or why it fits the job.
The fix is not to make the paragraph sound more polished. The fix is to replace noise with facts.
Google Business Profile description examples
These examples show different choices, not one template with the trade name swapped.
Plumber description example
Northside Plumbing is a residential plumbing company serving homeowners across the Austin metro. We handle leak repairs, drain and sewer work, fixture installations, and water-heater replacement. Operating since 2012, our team arrives in stocked service vehicles prepared for common repairs and diagnostics.
Why it works: The opening identifies the business and customer. Four service lines show the scope. The operating history and stocked vehicles provide concrete proof without claiming to be the best.
HVAC contractor description example
Clear Air Mechanical serves homeowners and light-commercial properties in the Raleigh area. Our team repairs and maintains central air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps, and indoor-air equipment. Service vehicles carry the diagnostic tools and common replacement parts needed for routine repair calls.
Why it works: The service mix is specific without becoming a catalog. The final sentence gives the customer an operational fact instead of a vague claim about expertise.
Cleaning business description example
Bright Room Cleaning provides recurring and one-time home cleaning in Columbus and nearby communities. Customers can schedule routine house cleaning, deep cleaning, and move-in or move-out service. Our employees follow room-by-room checklists, and the company supplies the standard equipment and cleaning products for each visit.
Why it works: The proof is operational. It tells the customer who performs the work, how the service is controlled, and what the company brings. It does not rely on years in business or a trade license that may not fit.
Landscaping company description example
Ridgeview Landscape Co. maintains residential and small commercial properties in the Denver metro. Services include seasonal cleanups, lawn and bed maintenance, planting, irrigation checks, and small landscape improvements. Our crew operates company equipment and plans recurring visits around the property’s growing season.
Why it works: The business is positioned as a maintenance and improvement company rather than a landscape architect or supply store. The final sentence gives a real operating detail relevant to recurring customers.
How many services should the description include?
Use enough services to show the main shape of the business, usually two to four service lines in a sentence. Keep the complete inventory in the Services editor.
If that inventory is still noisy or incomplete, the Google Business Profile Services guide helps consolidate variants and identify the material jobs to summarize here.
A plumber does not need to name faucet repair, toilet repair, garbage-disposal repair, hose-bib repair, shower-valve repair, and every other task in the description. Plumbing repairs, drain and sewer work, fixture installation, and water-heater service explains the operation without becoming a list.
The description is not a proven ranking lever for repeated keywords. Write it so a customer can quickly decide whether the business handles the type of work they need.
How to edit a Google Business Profile description
Google can change labels by account and device, so follow the live controls shown on the profile.
- Sign in to the Google account that manages the Business Profile.
- Find the profile in Google Search or Maps.
- Select Edit profile.
- Open Business information or the section containing Business description.
- Enter the final text, keeping it under 750 characters.
- Save the edit.
After the edit is accepted, sign out and view the public profile on a phone. Check the text that appears in the “From the business” section. Do not assume the editor preview matches every public display.
Final business description checklist
The description is ready when a person hearing it once can answer four questions:
- What kind of business is this?
- Does it serve customers like me in my area?
- Does it handle the main kind of work I need?
- What specific fact makes its claim believable?
Remove any sentence that does not help answer one of those questions. Then check the draft one last time for links, promotions, prices, unsupported superlatives, repeated locations, and service lists that belong elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Google Business Profile description character limit?
Google allows up to 750 characters in the Business description field. Treat that as a maximum, not a target; stop when a customer can understand the business, service fit, and proof clearly.
Can I put a link or phone number in my Google Business Profile description?
Do not include a URL; Google prohibits URLs and HTML in the description. Keep the phone number in the profile’s phone field so the description can explain the business.
Does a Google Business Profile description affect ranking?
Google does not publish a guaranteed ranking benefit for adding repeated services or locations to the description. Write for accurate customer understanding and keep the full service inventory in Services.
