Is Yelp Worth It for Contractors?

Decide whether Yelp is worth it for your contractor business, claim the free page, check local customer use, and test ads against completed-job profit.

Claiming an existing Yelp Business Page is usually worth the small amount of work required to control the business information customers can already see. Paying for Yelp Ads is a separate decision and should depend on whether Yelp is visible for your service locally and whether the ads produce completed jobs at an acceptable cost.

That means the answer can be “yes” to the free page and “no” to advertising.

Should contractors claim a free Yelp Business Page?

Yelp says there is no charge to create or claim a Business Page. It also states that a claimed page does not mean the business is a paid advertiser.

Search the exact business name while logged out. If a page already exists, check:

  • Business name and category
  • Phone and website
  • Hours
  • Services and service area where available
  • Photos
  • The call, message, quote, or website path customers receive

Claim the correct page rather than creating another copy. Yelp says business information can come from owners, public information, and customer activity, so an owner may discover a page they did not create.

If Yelp displays a different phone, address, or website from the business’s other core profiles, a local listings cleanup can trace the source and make the customer-facing records agree.

One platform-specific maintenance detail is easy to miss: Yelp says a claimed page may automatically appear unclaimed when the owner has not logged in to Yelp for Business during the previous 90 days. Keep the login under business control and include Yelp in the regular listing review.

The free-page task is complete when a logged-out customer can identify the right business, understand the relevant service, and reach a working call, message, quote, or website path. Adding promotional copy before the phone and destination work is the wrong order.

How to tell whether customers use Yelp locally

Do not start with Yelp’s national audience statistics. Search like a customer:

  1. Exact business name
  2. Business name plus city
  3. Priority service plus city
  4. Priority service plus “reviews”
  5. Two or three direct competitors

Record whether Yelp appears in branded results, whether it ranks for the service, and whether local contractor pages show recent, relevant activity.

This check leads to three different conclusions:

  • If Yelp appears for the business name, the page affects brand verification even when it sends few new leads.
  • If Yelp appears for priority service searches, it may also be a discovery channel.
  • If Yelp is absent from both and the page has no relevant activity, paid promotion has a weaker starting case.

The check takes ten minutes and is more useful than a national “percentage of Yelp users” applied to every trade and city.

Can contractors ask customers for Yelp reviews?

Yelp’s policy is unusually explicit: businesses should not ask customers, mailing-list subscribers, friends, family, or anyone else to review them on Yelp.

Yelp says its recommendation software may not recommend reviews that appear prompted or encouraged. It also prohibits incentives for reviews or removal and warns against asking for a review after collecting feedback through a survey or form.

Keep Yelp out of the post-job review request used for platforms that permit solicitation. Do not ask only happy customers, run a staff review contest, offer a discount, or write wording for the customer.

For Google and other workflows that permit a direct ask, the Google review request templates provide job-specific wording without crossing Yelp’s no-asking rule.

Owner responses serve a different purpose. Use them to correct factual context, acknowledge a service problem, or explain the next step to the customer and future readers. Do not treat a reply as a way to force removal or manipulate the rating.

The Worker bolts a Do not ask plate over an outgoing Yelp review-request chute while placing a factual owner-response note into a separate open reply slot.

How do Yelp Ads work for contractors?

Yelp describes its free page as an organic listing. Yelp Ads buy placement in Sponsored Results, including prominent search positions and placements on competitors’ pages. Its current marketing page says advertisers can adjust spend, edit or cancel ads, and start with an average budget as low as $5 per day.

Those are Yelp’s product claims, not a recommendation to use the minimum budget or proof that the channel will work for a contractor. The live account still needs to show acceptable targeting, billing, destination, promoted features, and cancellation controls.

Before launch, write down:

Service advertised:
Territory:
Daily and total budget cap:
Billing event:
Ad destination:
Pause/cancellation method:
Who answers contacts:
How Yelp will be recorded through the completed job:
Maximum acceptable cost per completed job:

Do not use a marketing agency’s universal Yelp CPC or lead-cost estimate. The contractor’s own job economics decide the ceiling.

How to test Yelp Ads for a contractor business

Choose one service group the business can currently fulfill. A broad “home services” test makes it difficult to separate profitable work from noise.

Track this funnel for 30 days or until the prewritten sample threshold is reached:

ad spend -> attributable contact -> qualified opportunity -> estimate -> booked job -> completed and paid job

For every completed Yelp job, record collected revenue and variable job costs. Then calculate:

Yelp cost per completed job = total Yelp ad spend / completed and paid Yelp jobs

Compare that cost with the average amount those jobs contribute after direct labor, materials, subcontractors, and other variable costs. Page views, clicks, messages, and unsigned estimates explain the funnel; they are not the return.

Which contractor trades are a good fit for Yelp?

An emergency plumber needs a page, territory, and call path that match real dispatch availability. Paying for a fast contact nobody can answer is not useful exposure.

A roofer may receive fewer opportunities with a longer estimate cycle. Use a sample threshold rather than calling one quiet week a failure or one unsigned roof proposal a success.

A recurring cleaner should record retention and route density. A new customer who repeats near an existing route may justify a higher initial acquisition cost than a distant one-time clean.

These differences are why another contractor’s Yelp verdict cannot answer the question for your business.

When is Yelp worth it for contractors?

Claim and maintain only when customers can find the page but local demand or paid economics do not justify ads.

Run or continue a controlled ad test when Yelp is visible for the service, the team can work the contacts, and completed-job cost stays below the written ceiling.

Pause paid spend but keep the page accurate when targeting, lead quality, capacity, or completed-job economics fail.

Do not remove a useful claimed page because an ad test failed. Do not keep ads because the free page helped one customer verify the business. They are different products doing different jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Yelp Business Page free for contractors?

Yes. Yelp says businesses can create or claim a Business Page at no charge, and a claimed page does not mean the contractor is a paid advertiser.

How much do Yelp Ads cost?

Yelp currently advertises an average starting budget as low as $5 per day, but the live account controls, targeting, and total test budget matter more than that minimum. Judge the result from completed-job cost.

Does a Yelp listing improve Google rankings?

Do not claim or advertise on Yelp for a promised Google ranking increase. Maintain the page for accurate customer information and judge Yelp Ads as a separate acquisition channel.
